Small Shady Terrace
Project type
Small & Shady
Date
2023
Location
Carlisle
Measuring just 16m square, this little shady terrace stared as a concrete yard. The client wanted somewhere to sit and also allow access to the garden from the back lane. The Birch tree was to be kept and incorporated into the border as it was originally had paving up to its base.
Lawn was out of the question due to the size so a central brick patio and adjoining path was planned. The concrete needed completely removing exposing some fairly decent soil underneath. The addition of plenty of organic matter was needed to boost the fertility and then lots of foliage and shade dwellers were added.
Although part of it face south, the shade from neighbouring properties meant little sun reached the garden. It was bright but mostly shaded.
The view from the ground floor window look straight towards the back gate. So lots of plants were planted and a curved path created so the eye didn't go straight to the back fence.
